On June 12, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing invites you to a lecture by Mia Anderer to "Uncover the Life of Dean Lung".
Speaker
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Mia Anderer attended the University of Chicago Laboratory School. She earned a B.A. degree from Oberlin College, where she also received vocal training at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She had a brief career as a singer and actress, performing in the Yale Repertory Theater's production of Shakespeare's The Tempest, set to the music of Henry Purcell, in a production of La Boheme at the University of Notre Dame, and, in Japan, dubbing Japanese films into English and doing voice-overs for Japanese TV commercials.
Her main professional involvement, for many years, was as a teacher at an all boys middle school in Harlem, where she was the only female teacher. Her students, who were predominantly African-American and from underprivileged backgrounds, studied reading, writing and oratory with her. All of them went on to good high schools, and many have graduated from highly respected colleges and universities. As the wife of Professor Paul Anderer and the mother of their three sons, Mia Anderer has acted as an unofficial editor for his written work throughout the years, and at his request, when he became the Vice Provost for International Relations at Columbia in 2005, she undertook a study of Dean Lung, the Chinese man to whom the Department of East Asian Studies owes its existence.
